Toronto to Host 25th Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) World Congress

Global researchers, advocates, policy experts, and community organizers will gather in downtown Toronto from August 19 to 22, 2026, for the 25th Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) Congress. 

The international conference - widely recognized as the world's premier forum on unconditional basic income - will bring global attention to economic security and social justice.

This year’s theme, “Basic Income and the Polycrisis: The Key to Unlocking the Puzzle,” framing basic income not merely as a targeted welfare intervention, but as a crucial pillar in addressing the complex, overlapping challenges defining the 21st century.

Organizers highlight that contemporary societies face interconnected global pressures, including accelerating climate disruption, rising income inequality, unaffordable living costs, and growing economic precarity.

In the face of these compounding pressures, traditional and fragmented social safety nets are increasingly recognized as inadequate to protect vulnerable populations.
