Lives Lived: Dr. Nouman Ali: Educator, Community Builder, and Advocate
Over the past thirty years, Nova Scotia’s Muslim community grew tenfold, and its dynamism was due in no small part to Dr. Ali's leadership.
Some lives continue to inspire long after they are gone. Dr. Nouman Ali—a beloved professor, community builder, and tireless advocate—dedicated his life to faith, education, service, and the well-being of those around him.
Dr. Ali passed away on July 18, 2026, following a tragic cycling accident in Halifax. Born in Iraq on February 22, 1955, and educated in the United States, he carried with him a lifelong belief in the transformative power of knowledge.
His sudden departure leaves a profound void across Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia’s Muslim community, and the broader social justice and environmental movements in the region. He is survived by his wife, Naima, his daughter, Eman, and his son, Mohammed.
A Mentor in the Classroom and Beyond
For over 35 years, Dr. Ali was a pillar in Dalhousie University’s Department of Civil and Resource Engineering.
As an academic, his expertise centered on transportation engineering and pavement design, leaving tangible improvements on infrastructure across communities.
Yet to generations of students, his impact extended far beyond lecture notes or research papers.
He was widely remembered as a mentor and father figure who inspired through his integrity, humility, and generosity.
His office door was always open, offering patience, guidance, and genuine care to help his students grow into thoughtful, principled professionals.
Rooted in Heritage and Standing for Justice
Born in Iraq, Dr. Ali often reflected on his heritage, famously noting, "I am Iraqi by nationality, but Palestinian by blood."
His passion for the Palestinian cause and international relief was not merely political, but deeply rooted in an unwavering belief in justice, equality, and human dignity.
Guided by compassion, he stood firmly for those facing injustice, regardless of who or where they were.
To many in Halifax, Dr. Ali exemplified the idea that "half the job is showing up."
Whether organizing relief fundraisers for Gaza, attending rallies, or offering a steady presence at local demonstrations, his advocacy offered hope and encouragement across decades.
A Pillar of Community and Environment

Serving the community since the late 1980s, he was instrumental in establishing and nurturing pivotal local institutions, including the Dartmouth Mosque, the Kearney Lake Mosque, the Sabeel Muslim and Youth Community Center, and the Ummah Society.
In March 2026, the Ummah Society presented him with its Distinguished Community Service Award in recognition of his decades of selfless leadership.
"What I will remember most is not his titles or accomplishments, remarkable as they were, but his rare ability to notice the things everyone else overlooked and then simply take care of them," said Imam Abdallah Yousri, CEO at Ummah Society. "I will never forget seeing a distinguished professor spend his evenings wiping the floors of the mosque, collecting and sorting recycling bottles, never thinking that any task was beneath him if it served the community and benefited people."
Beyond academia and faith leadership, Dr. Ali was an avid cyclist who embraced the freedom of the open road and advocated passionately for safer cycling infrastructure.
He was also a devoted movie enthusiast who appreciated stories that sparked conversation, known among friends for his remarkably sharp sense of humor and quick wit.
A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Nouman Ali lived with purpose, humility, and generosity.
He taught us that engineering is not merely about physical roads and buildings, but about constructing strong, compassionate, and equitable communities.
In his memory, local initiatives and his family have organized Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) efforts, including a campaign hosted on LaunchGood, to continue the educational, relief, and community causes he held dear.
