Advocacy groups and law enforcement are raising alarms over a disturbing escalation of Islamophobia in Ontario following two recent incidents: a physical assault in Thunder Bay and a coordinated campaign of harassment against a Muslim family in Clarington.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) stated that these cases highlight how anti-Muslim rhetoric, both online and in person, is posing a direct threat to the safety of Canadian Muslim families.
Canada Day Assault Under Investigation in Thunder Bay
In Thunder Bay, police are investigating an alleged Islamophobic attack that occurred just after 12:45 p.m. on July 1 in the area of Villa Street and Cumberland Street North.
According to a statement released by the NCCM, a man of Palestinian descent was walking to a local park with his wife, two young children, and his 63-year-old mother when they were approached by an unknown individual. The family members noted that the two women were visibly Muslim.
The suspect reportedly began shouting anti-Muslim slurs and obscenities at the women, including yelling “f*** Muslims.” When the man tried to calmly intervene and asked the suspect to leave his family alone, the individual allegedly assaulted him.
The Thunder Bay Police Service responded to the scene, where paramedics treated the victim before transporting him to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police located and arrested a suspect, who has been charged with assault.
"Every person has the right to feel safe in our community, and the Thunder Bay Police Service remains committed to investigating any allegations or reports that a person has been targeted because of hate or bias," the police service said in a media release, noting they are fully aware of information suggesting the incident was racially motivated.
Online Misinformation Feeds Real-World Harassment in Clarington
Meanwhile, in Southern Ontario, a Muslim family operating a small hobby farm in Clarington says they have been living a "nightmare" after baseless online rumors transformed into physical intimidation, property violations, and a planned protest outside their home.
Mohsin Bhuiyan, who has run the small farm for the past year, reported that his family has been "terrorized" by a digital campaign claiming his property functions as an "illegal slaughterhouse" targeting Canada geese. The misinformation quickly escalated, resulting in unidentified individuals flying drones over his property, taking photos of his home, publishing his private address, and posting social media threats calling for his house to be burned down.
The rumours triggered unannounced, sweeping inspections from four separate regulatory bodies: Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness; Clarington Bylaw Enforcement; Local Building Inspectors; The Durham Region Public Health Unit
Official letters from all four agencies have cleared the property of any illegal meat processing operations. The Municipality of Clarington explicitly confirmed that a thorough investigation yielded "no evidence" of an illegal slaughterhouse on site.
While building inspectors noted minor code matters regarding two small structures built without standard permits, the issues were entirely unrelated to food processing, and Bhuiyan was instructed simply to apply for the necessary permits.
Despite official exoneration, the intimidation intensified when John Mutton—the former mayor of Bowmanville who was banned from provincial lobbying for two years following the Greenbelt inquiry—confronted Bhuiyan and his wife outside their home while filming the interaction.
Mutton told reporters he was acting on behalf of an "army of people" concerned with animal welfare, dismissing the official municipal findings and claiming that his past mayoral experience made him an expert on local bylaws.
Mutton has frequently posted online regarding properties across Canada, calling for investigations into alleged illegal slaughterhouses, specifically targeting those operating as halal. He denied his actions constitute harassment, asserting his motivations are strictly regulatory and "have nothing to do with race... [or] religion."
A "Dangerous Trend"
Advocates argue that these incidents represent a structural failure to contain hate-filled conspiracy theories before they manifest as physical dangers.
Omar Khamissa, Chief Mobilization Officer for the NCCM, pointed out that digital platforms have become safe havens for dangerous rhetoric that easily spills into the physical world when amplified by figures with public platforms.
"It started as something that was online and now it's transformed into real-life harassment, real-life campaigns, real-life threats," Khamissa said. He emphasized that the targeting of the Bhuiyan family is part of an alarming, wider spike in Islamophobia across Canada. "We're not just talking about one family anymore. Now we're talking about what kind of country we have."
The Durham Regional Police Service confirmed that they have received formal complaints regarding the Clarington farm case and are actively investigating whether the online commentary and targeting violate Criminal Code statutes. Police units were deployed to maintain peace and ensure public safety during a protest scheduled at the hobby farm on Friday.
Despite the fear generated by the weeks of targeted hostility, Bhuiyan stated that his family intends to stay on their farm. "Canada is a peaceful country... regardless of your race, religion, or gender... we're all Canadians," Bhuiyan said. "Somebody has to step in and stop all of this nonsense."
