G7 on notice: thousands demand debt forgiveness now!

As the G7 Summit approaches in Kananaskis, a powerful movement for global and ecological debt justice has converged in Calgary, bringing together activists, faith leaders, and concerned citizens from across Canada and around the world.

The G7 Jubilee People's Forum, a four-day gathering organized by KAIROS Canada and its partners, is serving as a crucial platform to advocate for the Jubilee 2025: Turn Debt into Hope campaign, which calls for the cancellation of unjust debts and comprehensive financial reforms.

From June 12th to 15th, the forum in Calgary has been a hub of activity, featuring inspiring discussions, community building, and public actions.

Dignitaries from faith communities and Indigenous nations have lent their voices to the cause, highlighting the urgent need to address the crippling debt crisis facing many nations in the Global South and Indigenous communities.

The heart of this mobilization is the Jubilee 2025 initiative, which builds upon the legacy of the highly successful Jubilee 2000 campaign.

That earlier effort led to the cancellation of $100 billion in debt for 36 low-income countries, demonstrating the tangible impact of collective action.

However, the current debt crisis remains severe, with many nations forced to prioritize debt repayments over essential services like healthcare, education, and vital climate action.

KAIROS Canada emphasizes that Jubilee 2025 is not just about financial relief; it's also about ecological justice.

The campaign advocates for addressing "ecological debt," recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable nations that have contributed least to the crisis.

By pushing for debt cancellation, global financial reform, and a transparent debt resolution framework within the United Nations, the initiative aims to create a more equitable and sustainable global economy.
