Canadians step forward to support B.C. residents impacted by floods and landslides

Canadian charities have launched flood relief campaigns to support residents of British Columbia who have been affected by the recent mudslides and floods.

Severe rainfall has caused mudslides and debris flow, resulting in the closure of many highways, streets, and schools in British Columbia’s interior and southern regions.

Parts of the Coquihalla and Trans Canada highways were closed as they were flooded by surging rivers.

Several towns and cities have been evacuated due to floodwaters, including the city of Merritt, where its population of 7,000 was ordered to evacuate because flooding caused the complete failure of the municipality’s wastewater treatment plant and put the public in immediate danger.

“Thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes and when they return, they'll find water-damaged homes and businesses. We are responding,” said Globalmedic, a disaster relief and humanitarian charity.

“Today our volunteers stepped up to pack 407 Clean Up Kits with products donated by P&G. We dropped them off at the airport and Air Canada is flying them to B.C. to support families affected by the flooding!”

“To help us continue the aid, please make a donation to the B.C. Flood Response fund at http://globalmedic.ca/donate

The Canadian Red Cross has also launched the British Columbia Floods and Extreme Weather Appeal.

Islamic Relief Canada has dispatched a team to conduct a needs assessment  to see where we can help the people of BC.

“Please keep the people of BC in your prayers.  We're devastated to learn about the flooding and storms over British Columbia that have left our brothers and sisters displaced, unhoused and trapped without access to food and safety supplies,” said Islamic Relief in an online post.

"Our teams in BC are loading up vehicles with urgent supplies, and working with community organizations to increase the impact and reach of your donations. We are providing emergency relief to communities affected by the devastating flooding and mudslides in Abbotsford, British Columbia. They will be providing essential food items, hygiene supplies, and other essential items. You can help provide urgent food, hygiene kits and essential supplies to evacuees. Anything you can give will make a difference!"  You donate to IRC's B.C. flood relief at: https://www.islamicreliefcanada.org/.../bc-floods.../
