The acquisition of the facility, located at 124–126 Queens Plate Drive in Etobicoke, represents a major expansion for one of Canada’s oldest Muslim organizations. Founded in 1957, the society has anchored Toronto’s Albanian Muslim community for generations from its longtime home at 564 Annette Street in the city’s west end. Now, on the cusp of its 70th anniversary, the organization is preparing to transition into a significantly larger space designed to meet the spiritual, educational, and cultural needs of a growing, multi-generational community across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). ### A Long-Awaited Dream Realized For community elders and newer generations alike, securing a larger permanent home has been a shared aspiration pursued over many decades. “This has been a dream shared by generations of Albanian Muslims who came before us,” the AMST Board of Directors and Imam shared in a joint statement announcing the purchase. “Many prayed for this day, worked tirelessly toward it, donated generously, volunteered countless hours, and never lost hope that one day our community would have a larger home for future generations.” The purchase was made possible through a grassroots campaign that combined financial gifts from hundreds of local families, countless hours of volunteer outreach, and critical interest-free community financing. Society leadership expressed deep gratitude to community members who extended benevolent financing, noting that their contributions allowed the acquisition to move forward fully aligned with Islamic ethical principles. ### Preserving Faith, Heritage, and Language Beyond providing expanded space for daily and Friday congregational prayers, the vision for 124–126 Queens Plate Drive encompasses a full-fledged cultural hub. Community leaders emphasize that the new centre is conceived as a gathering place to nurture both spiritual development and cultural preservation. Planned programming for the new facility includes accredited Albanian language classes, traditional cultural arts and dance programs, youth leadership camps, family educational seminars, and social spaces intended to foster intergenerational connection. “This achievement is far greater than the purchase of a building,” the leadership noted. “This is the new foundation for preserving our religion, our Albanian identity, our language, and our culture for generations to come. This is where our children and grandchildren will learn about their faith, build lifelong friendships, celebrate milestones together, and strengthen their connection to their heritage.” ### The Path to Opening: Ramadan 2027 While the purchase is complete, work on the Queens Plate Drive site is just beginning. AMST has established a dedicated Contractor Management Committee tasked with overseeing the comprehensive planning, design, and interior renovations required to transform the commercial property into a fully functional house of worship and community centre. During the renovation period, all regular religious services, daily prayers, Jummah prayers, and educational programs will continue without interruption at the society’s existing mosque on Annette Street. If construction and permitting proceed according to schedule, the organization aims to officially open the doors of the new Albanian Mosque & Cultural Centre in time for the start of Ramadan in early 2027. ### Building for the Next Generation The expansion of the Albanian Muslim Society of Toronto highlights a broader trend across Canadian Muslim institutions: early pioneer communities outgrowing historic, modest facilities and stepping into purpose-built, comprehensive civic spaces.
