Commemorating Black History Month: A Profile of Imam Michael AbdurRashid Taylor

As we observe Black History Month, it is essential to highlight the contemporary figures who continue to shape the Canadian landscape through service, faith, and justice.

Among the most respected voices in our community is Imam Michael AbdurRashid Taylor, a man whose career has been defined by a commitment to the marginalized and a dedication to the spiritual well-being of those often forgotten by society.

A Pioneer in Spiritual Care

Imam Taylor’s journey is one of breaking barriers.

In 2013, he made history when he was appointed as the Ontario Regional Chaplain for Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

In this role, he took on the responsibility of overseeing spiritual and religious care for the entire Ontario region—a milestone that resonated deeply within the Muslim community as a sign of institutional recognition and leadership.

His work in chaplaincy extends far beyond administrative duties.

Imam Taylor has been a tireless advocate for the religious rights of incarcerated Muslims.

He understands that for many, faith is the only bridge to rehabilitation and personal peace.

His approach is not merely about providing religious rituals but about fostering a sense of dignity and humanity within the prison system.

Justice and Reconciliation

Imam Taylor’s influence is felt strongly in the realms of restorative justice and interfaith dialogue.

He has specialized in "Alternatives to Violence" workshops, helping individuals navigate conflict through non-violent means.

His expertise in crisis intervention and mental health—furthered during his time as the Manager of Spiritual and Religious Care at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)—has made him a vital resource for addressing the intersection of faith and mental wellness.

One of the most profound chapters of his service was his role as an Honorary Witness to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Between 2011 and 2015, he stood in solidarity with Indigenous communities, bridging the gap between Muslim Canadians and the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

This work underscores his belief that community building is an interfaith and intercultural responsibility.

Imam Taylor continues to broaden his role in the wider society by providing Marriage Officiant services, holistic wellness solutions, and he sits as the Muslim Representative on the Interfaith Committee on Canadian Military Chaplaincy.

Education and Recognition

A lifelong learner, Imam Taylor holds a Master of Theological Studies from Regis College at the University of Toronto and is a graduate of the Rotman School of Management’s Leadership Development Program.

His academic rigor and practical experience have allowed him to mentor the next generation of leaders, notably through his work at Emmanuel College.

In 2016, his decades of service were honored with the Excellence in Religion Award from the African Canadian Achievement Awards.

Imam Taylor represents the best of our community: a leader who leads with humility, a scholar who acts with compassion, and a trailblazer who continues to open doors for others.
