United Way Greater Toronto honours eight community champions during South Asian Heritage Month

United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT) announced the recipients of its South Asian Heritage Month recognition, celebrating eight exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions to the non-profit and social sectors across the GTA.

The awards, spotlighted as part of the South Asian Community Advisory Council’s (SACAC) social media campaign throughout May, recognized "unsung heroes" who are quietly creating positive change and inspiring impact.

South Asian Heritage Month, observed every May, is a time to honour the vibrant culture, remarkable resilience, and invaluable contributions of South Asian communities to Canadian society.

In this spirit, SACAC highlighted individuals whose dedication embodies the spirit of community upliftment.

The changemakers recognized by United Way Greater Toronto are:

  • Varni Tayalan, MBA, B.Sc.
  • Jag Sharma
  • Zohra Zoberi
  • Sreya Binte Sayeed
  • Ritu Neb
  • Pawandeep Aujla
  • Ritu Singarayer
  • Faisal Kutty

These community champions were celebrated for their efforts in uplifting communities and driving positive change, serving as an inspiration within the Greater Toronto Area.

The recognition underscores United Way Greater Toronto's commitment to acknowledging the diverse contributions that strengthen the social fabric of the region.

Among the recipients is Faisal Kutty, a highly regarded Lawyer, TEDx Speaker, Writer, Affiliate Faculty at Rutgers CSRR, Associate Professor of Law Emeritus at Valparaiso University, and former Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Upon receiving the recognition, Mr. Kutty expressed his profound gratitude: "I'm truly humbled and honoured to be recognized during South Asian Heritage Month by the South Asian Community Advisory Council (SACAC) at United Way Greater Toronto."

He extended his thanks to Kiran Moid, SACAC Vice Chair, for the nomination, and to the entire Council and jury for this meaningful recognition. "I’m grateful for the opportunity to be included alongside so many inspiring changemakers," he added.

Mr. Kutty emphasized the significance of such acknowledgments in challenging times: "At a time when voices of conscience are often marginalized or silenced, this recognition strengthens my resolve to continue speaking out for justice, challenging misinformation, and amplifying the struggles—and the hopes—of those too often overlooked."

He concluded by dedicating the honour to his network of supporters, stating, "This honour is not mine alone. It belongs to all those who have supported, taught, challenged, and journeyed with me in the fight for equity and dignity. Let’s continue the work—any way we can."

His words underscore a deep commitment to ongoing advocacy and community betterment.
