Toronto to host 21st Annual UMAA Convention, uniting Shia Muslims from across North America

Journalist and broadcaster Mehdi Hasan will deliver the keynote address at the 21st Annual Convention of the Universal Muslim Association of America (UMAA), set to take place in Toronto from October 10–12, 2025.

The gathering, to be held at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre, marks the first time in 15 years that UMAA has brought its flagship event to Canada.

Organizers expect thousands of Shia Muslims from across North America to attend.

This year’s theme, “The Global Shia Narrative: Identity, Challenges, and Opportunities,” will explore theological foundations, historical experiences, and contemporary issues shaping Shia Muslim life worldwide.

Panels will examine topics such as sectarianism, political marginalization, and misrepresentation, while also highlighting paths toward interfaith dialogue, civic engagement, and stronger community institutions.

The convention will feature:

  • Panel discussions and workshops on theology, current affairs, and youth leadership
  • Intra-faith and interfaith dialogues
  • Cultural and social gatherings fostering community ties
  • The UMAA Matrimonial program, supporting faith-based family formation

UMAA, a registered non-profit with consultative status at the United Nations, has built its reputation as a platform for Shia Muslim advocacy, civic engagement, and networking.

By hosting the convention in Toronto, organizers aim to enhance Canadian representation in global Shia discourse.

Registration is open through UMAA’s website, with special hotel rates available for attendees. https://umaamerica.org/
