The Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) issued the following statement on the passing of Dr. El Tantawy Attia:

We begin by honouring the memory of Dr. El Tantawy Attia, pausing to reflect on his extraordinary contributions and the lasting impact of his work.

His passing is a profound loss, felt deeply by Muslims across Ontario and by all who were touched by his leadership, compassion, and commitment to serving this ummah.

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Ontario NDP MPPs extend their heartfelt condolences to Dr. Attia’s family, Muslim Ontarians, and to all who worked closely with him.

We stand firmly in solidarity with everyone mourning his loss.

Last week, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre), and MPP Chris Glover (Spadina–Fort York) visited Masjid Toronto to offer their condolences to the mosque’s leadership and community, and to reflect on the profound legacy Dr. El-Tantawy Attia leaves behind.

Walking through the spaces he helped build, we were reminded of the clarity of his vision for Muslims in Ontario; one rooted in dignity, inclusion, and opportunity.

His work laid a foundation that continues to guide and strengthen our collective efforts today.

As Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught: “When a man dies, his good deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who will pray for him.” (Sahih Muslim).

Dr. Attia’s life embodied these principles.

The institutions he built, the people he inspired, and the knowledge he shared will continue to benefit generations long after his return to his Lord.

May his legacy be a source of lasting good and may his family and our community find comfort and strength during this difficult time.

The Ontario NDP stands with you and with Muslims across the province as we work to build an Ontario that truly serves and includes all.
