Islamophobia on the rise in Durham Region
The Durham Region is grappling with a concerning surge in hate-motivated incidents, specifically targeting the Muslim community, prompting condemnations from local leaders.
The rise of Islamophobia, manifested through acts of vandalism and intolerance, has deeply unsettled residents across the region.
In Orono, a recent incident saw seven vehicles vandalized at a local mosque on Church Street North. This hate-motivated mischief, reported on the evening of May 24, 2025, is currently under investigation by the Durham Regional Police Service.
The Municipality of Clarington has issued a statement condemning the attack.
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster expressed his profound dismay, stating, "I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the ignorant incident of intolerance that occurred at a local mosque. It is truly disappointing to see someone use their limited understanding of a faith to harass its members. I want to state firmly that religious hate and intolerance do not reflect our Clarington values."
Mayor Foster also urged any witnesses to come forward and assist the police investigation.
Tenzin Shomar, Chair of the Clarington Diversity Advisory Committee, echoed the mayor's sentiments, emphasizing the community's right to safety.
"This despicable act of hate is unsettling. Everyone should feel safe in their community, particularly at their place of worship," Shomar said. "Our thoughts are with the Muslim community and hope that those responsible are found and held accountable. Clarington Diversity Advisory Committee will continue to work with Council to ensure hate has no home in Clarington."
Beyond Orono, the town of Whitby has also been targeted with multiple instances of Islamophobic graffiti in two separate locations, further highlighting the escalating nature of these hate-motivated acts across the region.
Authorities continue to work closely with community leaders to provide support and ensure that all residents feel safe and respected in the face of these disturbing incidents.
The Durham Regional Police Service is actively investigating these cases, and the community hopes for swift justice for those responsible.
