Generations Toronto: A New Model for Intergenerational Living

A unique multi-generational housing and care campus is taking shape in Toronto, aiming to address some of the city’s most pressing challenges—affordable housing, long-term care, childcare, and social isolation.

Called Generations Toronto, the project is under construction in the Don Mills–Wynford Drive area and is expected to open in spring/summer 2026.

It will bring together 390 below-market rental apartments, a 122-bed long-term care home, an early childhood development centre, and a wide range of health, cultural, and recreational services.

Project leaders say the goal is to build more than just a set of facilities—it’s to create a community where people of all ages can live, learn, and thrive together.

“Generations Toronto is about fostering belonging,” said organizers. “By connecting seniors, families, and children in one place, we’re creating a model of care and community that reflects our city’s diversity.”

The initiative is being developed with support from the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario, and local community organizations.

While the vision is rooted in the Ismaili Muslim community’s tradition of care and service, the campus will welcome residents from all backgrounds.

Applications for the below-market housing units are expected to open in fall 2025, with long-term care licensing and admissions to follow ahead of the campus opening.

Observers say the project could become a model for cities across Canada seeking to address rising housing costs and an aging population while strengthening social ties across generations.
