Alia Hogben, champion of Muslim women's rights, passes away peacefully

Alia Hogben, a pioneering advocate for Muslim women's rights and a decorated Canadian leader, has passed away peacefully in her sleep, the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) announced today.

She received the Order of Canada and an honorary doctorate from Queen's University, celebrating her unwavering commitment to equality, interfaith dialogue, and social justice.

"Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return," the CCMW shared in a poignant statement. "It is with profound sadness that we share with you the news that our dear Alia left us this morning peacefully in her sleep. She was our mother, sister, mentor, and leader. First and foremost, she was a superb human being."

For over a decade, Hogben served as the Executive Director of the CCMW, where she was described as a "bold and fearless beacon" who guided the organization through challenging times.

Under her leadership, the CCMW became a prominent voice for the equal status of women within Muslim communities.

Born to Indian parents in Myanmar, Hogben's extensive global experience undoubtedly shaped her empathetic and inclusive approach.

She dedicated decades of her professional life as a social worker, serving in various agencies focused on child welfare, children's mental health, and support for adults with developmental disabilities.

Her tireless work also extended to organizations addressing violence against women and girls, demonstrating her deep commitment to protecting vulnerable populations.

Despite her extraordinary achievements, Hogben was known for her characteristic modesty.

She was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2012, recognized as "an articulate spokesperson for the humane, tolerant and equality-based interpretation of Islam and for interfaith dialogue."

A year prior, Queen's University awarded her an honorary doctorate. In 2014, Maclean's Magazine included her in its list of the 50 "Most Powerful" people in Canada.

Beyond her professional accolades, Hogben was cherished for her immense generosity and hospitality, embracing all as family.

Her principled stand for  inclusive Islam made her a respected voice both domestically and internationally, and she presented before parliamentary committees and at United Nations forums.

"Her legacy lives on in her family and all of us at CCMW," the organization stated. "Our heartfelt gratitude to Alia for her wisdom and guidance cannot be expressed in a few words. We are sad at this immense loss and know that she deserved a peaceful passing. We pray for her tranquil journey to Jannat-ul-Firdaus. May God’s blessings always be with her."

The CCMW extended its deepest condolences to Hogben's family and friends, praying for their strength and comfort during this difficult time.
