Olive Tree Foundation Awards Scholarships for 2020

The Olive Tree Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual scholarships.

The Mohamed and Opheera Nasir Scholarship has been awarded to Attaur Rahman, a graduate of Jarvis Collegiate Institute, who will be attending the University of Toronto, Mississauga in Social Sciences.

Attaur is an active volunteer in the Regent Park neighbourhood with The TD Centre of Learning & Development, Mothers for Peace, Back 2 Basics and the Ontario Justice Education Network.

The Faisal Ali Scholarship has been awarded to Fatima Zerlish, also a graduate of Jarvis Collegiate Institute. She will be attending George Brown College studying Business and Marketing.

Fatima volunteers with Mental Health/Wellness Club, Pathways to Education, Christian Resource Centre-Regent Park Community Centre, and Regent Park Focus Media Arts Centre.

“Thank you for this generous scholarship,” says Fatima  Zerlish. “I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as the recipient of this scholarship.”

Both students spoke highly of the support they have received from their parents and teachers.

“Role models, parents and teachers, all play an essential part in a student’s quest for higher learning,” says Fatima Zerlish. “With proper support, they can significantly increase a student’s chance for academic success, and help them obtain a higher education.”

“Parents and teachers provide a goal for students to strive for and achieve at higher levels,” adds Attaur Rahman. “They set expectations for students to meet and they are trusted adults for students to confide in.”

The Olive Tree Foundation is a charitable foundation that promotes community development through the collection of endowed funds and charitable contributions to fund services for the long-term benefit of the community.

The scholarships were endowed by families to honor the memories of their parents and relatives.
