The Dome - A film by Mamoun Hassan

By Mamoun S. Hassan

It is not every day that one runs into people like Javid.

An architect by training and street artist professional, Javid commands your artistic inclinations from the moment you see his work.

He is a calligraphy-graffiti-painter who is truly under appreciated or (as he might describe it) underground.

In this project, he was commissioned to replicate the dome of the Prophet Mohamed’s mosque at Toronto’s Madina Masjid.

He knew it was going to be challenging but he also knew that he was the man for it.

He set out, by hand and in almost a year was able to complete it.

As a Muslim filmmaker, such a project was a dream come true.

The documentation of the cross point between street art, modern day graffiti, and Islamic art is the epitome of what I dream of.

I filmed the process, from early on, and kept on documenting it till it was completed.

The result was this massive amount of footage and images.

The Dome is what I made of it.
