Muslims across Canada celebrate Eid on Wednesday

The Canadian Muslim community will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday, July 6.

The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) which recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal, declared the first day of Shawwal 1437 to be Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

The Hilal Committee of Metropolitan Toronto & Vicinity announced tonight that ‘there was no confirmed sighting of new Hilal today; Ramadan will complete 30 days; 1st of Shawwal and Eidul Fitr on Wednesday, July 6th 2016.’

The Crescent Committee of Canada also announced that ‘no reliable reports of the new crescent moon sighting for the month of Shawwal 1437 on the evening of Monday July 4th 2016 (29th Ramadan). Therefore the blessed month of Ramadan completes 30 days and the 1st of Shawwal (Eid al Fitr 2016) is on Wednesday 6th of July, 2016.’
