CivicMuslims hold #GIVTAR to support food banks

(June 28, 2015) – CivicMuslims will be holding a one-of-a-kind iftar themed, ‪#‎GIVTAR, on Saturday July 4 at Toronto’s Centre for Social Innovation (CSI)-Regent Park in support of the Give 30 national hunger-fighting campaign.

“#GIVTAR is a special iftar evening to give back to local food banks in support of the Give 30 campaign,” says Mohamed Awad, Chair of CivicMuslims. “We hope to promote the importance of volunteerism and civic engagement this Ramadan.”

Founded in 2012, Give 30 has become a national campaign with eleven partner food banks in six provinces. The initiative has raised almost $250,000 to fight hunger over the past three campaigns.

“We are excited to partner with Give 30 for this initiative,” adds Mohamed Awad. “Give 30 is an inspiring grassroots campaign that raised over $104,000 last year for food banks across Canada.”

“We’re excited to support this worthy project and hope to reach new heights in combating hunger within our communities.”

The keynote speaker at the event will be Gerard Kennedy, former MP & MPP, and former director of Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto and Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Ziyaad Mia, Founder of Give 30 and Amjad Tarsin,  Chaplain and Executive Director, the Muslim Chaplaincy at UofT will be offering reflections on Ramadan and fasting.
